Former Asian champion Mitchel Martinez and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Annie Albania scored spectacular victories in the 2008 Women?s World Amateur Boxing Championships at the Ningbo Youngor Gymnasium in the ancient Chinese city Tuesday afternoon.
A brief report from AIBA received by www.insidesports, Standard Today and Viva Sports said that lightweight Martinez completely dominated a hapless Leeann Boodram of Trinidad en route to an overwhelming 15:2 victory in a fight where Martinez proved too fast and too strong for Boodram.
Boodram was a bronze medalist in the last Pan American Games losing in the semi finals to the sturdy Brazilian girl Adriana Araugo. Boodram, a comparative newcomer was applauded by the fans as she left the ring in Trinidad.
Not to be outdone by her teammate Martinez, light bantamweight Albania ,as the classification goes in the women?s division, was even more dominating in her bout against Sacred Downing of the United States , battering the American girl in a completely one-sided bout to win 18:0.
The win by Albania was all the more impressive because the 23 year old Downing from Trenton . New Jersey won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Trinidad earlier this year and won five consecutive US national championships besides a slew of Golden Gloves titles.
With their wins both Albania and Martinez entered the quarter finals.
Earlier, the the Philippines Alice Kate Aparri dropped a heartbreaking 4:3 decision to Canada?s tough Jacqueline Park who was regarded as one of the favorites in the light flyweight division at the 2008 Women?s World Boxing Championships in the Ningbo Youngor Gymnasium in the ancient Chinese city.
The 24 year old Aparri who scored an impressive 7-2 victory over Monika Csik of Hungary in her opening bout couldn?t duplicate that performance and bowed out of the competition. It was a painful loss for the 2006 bronze medalist.
However, in a day of mixed fortunes for the Philippines on Monday, Analisa Cruz scored a stunning 6:5 upset over Argentina ?s Paola Benevidez who was the Pan American Games champion in the flyweight division in 2006 and 2007.
In Sunday?s action pinweight Josie Gabuco scored a comfortable 7-3 win over Vietnam ?s Nguyen Thi Hoa to advance to the next round.
