It began when Mexico?s greatest fighter Julio Cesar Chavez assailed Oscar De La Hoya who had beaten him twice. Then after a dominating win in a rematch against tough Matt Vanda, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr picked it up from his father and said in a post-fight interview that his money was on Pacquiao.
Tuesday morning Manila Time, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, in an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports said ?all the Mexicans want to help Pacquiao. They want to walk him into the ring.?
Arum mentioned WBC Continental Americas light middleweight champion Chavez Jr, WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, Mexican legend Erik ?El Terrible? Morales and WBA super flyweight interim champion Jorge ?Travieso? Arce among others.
Simply put, Arum said ?the Mexicans love Pacquiao? because he was like Mexican fighters, a warrior, adding that ?Pacquiao is more popular in Mexico than De La Hoya.?
Discussing the ?Dream Match? Chavez Jr said ?people say it?s a crazy fight but honestly, from a fighter?s point of view I think De La Hoya is going to have a very tough time with Pacquiao. He can win the fight, but my money is on Pacquiao. All the Mexicans are backing up Pacquiao.?
De La Hoya has made an effort to win over the Mexicans to support him with Golden Boy Promotions CEO referring to the fact that De La Hoya was a son of Mexican migrants who grew up in East Los Angeles and waved both the American and Mexican flags in the ring when he won an Olympic gold medal.
While he does have a tremendous following, Team Pacquiao believes that having beaten Mexican legends Marco Antonio Barrera, Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez and a host of others, and with his exciting, aggressive fighting style the Filipino whirlwind has been embraced by many Mexicans.
