Internationally respected referee/judge Bruce McTavish has been called upon to play a key role in the 46th Annual Convention of the World Boxing Council which will be held in Chengdu , China from November 2 to 8.

McTavish was chosen to serve as Chairman of the Ring officials seminar after Herbert Minn indicated he was unable to attend.

McTavish informed www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports from Chengdu that Tom Kaczmarek will do the judges portion, he will handle the referees portion and Dr. Nasser Cruz, head of the Philippines Games and Amusements Board boxing division will assist Dr. Paul Wallace who is head of the medical board.

McTavish is a New Zealander who is married to Carmen Tayag from an illustrious family in Pampanga and has settled down in Angeles City . McTavish told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports he wants to be regarded as a Filipino and says he wishes to consider his being chosen for an important role in the convention of the premier boxing organization in the world as an honor for the Philippines.

The WBC informed us that several current world champions as well as former champions have already started arriving in Chengdu for the historic convention. Last year?s convention was held in Manila and was acknowledged by Sulaiman and officials and guests as a resounding success.

Fighters of different weight divisions, in addition to managers and representatives, who will take part in the working sessions to be carried out at the Convention are reportedly streaming into Chengdu.

Recently crowned heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, Timothy Bradley, Toshiaki Nishioka, Hozumi Hasegawa, Oscar Larios, Cristian Mijares, Juan Palacios, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Nakhonluang Sahaprom, Masahiko Harada, John Stracey, and Jeff Fenech are expected to attend among others, as well as some other fighters that will participate in the card that is slated to take place on November 7.

It will be the biggest professional boxing event staged in China since pro boxing began a few years ago.

Colorful promoter Don King, working with the Chinese government is staging the fights which will be headlined by a heavyweight battle between Poland ?s rugged Andrew Golota and American Ray Austin.

Also scheduled to see action in the November 7 card at the Sichuan Gymnasium which will be part of the convention highlights, is Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera who was beaten twice by Filipinio ring idol Manny Pacquiao.

The 34 year old Barrera who has a record of 63-6 with 42 knockouts will face Sammy Ventura whose last fight was on September 7, 2007 in which he suffered a second round TKO at the hands of Wes Ferguson. In his previous fight on July 11, Ventura lost by a fourth round TKO to undefeated Anthony Salcido (12-0).

Ventura has an unimpressive record of 25-19 with 20 knockouts but 16 of his 19 losses were stoppages prompting the WBC to issue a statement disassociating itself from the Barrera ? Ventura fight.
