JARO DROPS SOSA BUT IS OUTBOXED IN TITLE FIGHT

Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro dropped Mexico?s Edgar Sosa in the ninth round but was out-boxed most of the way and lost by a unanimous twelve round decision in a title fight at the Arena Mexico in Mexico City.
Well known boxing writer and TV reporter James Blears, in an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports, Manila Standard and Viva Sports said Jaro ranked No. 7 was three inches shorter than Sosa but caught the champion with ?an explosive short right in the middle of the ninth round which put Sosa on the seat of his pants.?
He said there was no count as Sosa got up but he had lost his mouth guard which caused a few seconds delay. Blears reported that Jaro ?went after him and there were some anxious moments? in the crowd of over 12,000 but Sosa ?used his boxing brain to get out of trouble.?
Blears said Sosa scored well by ?putting flurries of punches together? but noted that Jaro would ?now and then catch him with right hands? and was dangerous when he ?got in close with some good body shots.?
He said Sosa would catch Jaro on the ropes and throw a number of combinations but pointed out that the Filipino was ?very strong and harder to hit than you could imagine.?
Two judges had Sosa the winner by identical scores of 117-110 while the third judge had Sosa the winner 118-109.
Blears drove home the point that Sosa needs ?a bit of rest? before he defends his title against another Filipino ? mandatory challenger Juanito Rubillar who won the right to a title shot with a split decision win over former world champion Omar Nino.
Sosa?s fight against Jaro titled ?Battle in the Capital? was his sixth successful title defense in a span of some 14 months and even though he out-boxed Jaro ?comprehensively? Blears believes the champion needs a break before battling Rubillar who is a lot bigger than Jaro besides being a southpaw.
He commended Jaro for his performance and said that prior to the fight he was ?smiling and quietly confident.? In a pre-fight interview Jaro said he didn?t want to leave the decision in the hands of the judges saying ?I will knock him out.? But he tried and failed and by all accounts Sosa deserved to win.
The Mexican champion was quoted by boxing writer Robert Coster as saying he considered Jaro ?dangerous, with the uppercut ? a punch he had mastered very well? but added ?I believe I have the plan and the skills to beat him.?
With the win Sosa?s record now stands at 33-5 with 17 knockouts while Jaro drops to 28-7-4, 17 knockouts.
