The manager of World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight champion Michael Domingo, young Michael Aldeguer of the famed ALA Gym, says they took the fight against former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin ?to give Domingo a chance to show what he can do. Is he just another journeyman or is he going to be a world contender.?

Aldeguer said that should Domingo win and win impressively ?definitely the world opens up for him. We are going to bring him to the States.? He noted that "Vorapin is ranked No. 3 so that says it all. If Michael wins this fight, no question he is going to campaign in the US and maybe fight for a world title in the future.?

Domingo and his Thai opponent both tipped the scales at the 118 pound limit during the official weigh-in. The weigh-in was conducted at the Cebu Grand Hotel, official hotel of the ?Daytime Boxing? fight card of well-known promoter Sammy Gello-ani in cooperation with Viva Sports and Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum.

The fights will be telecast ?live? from the Cebu Coliseum beginning at 9:00 a.m over Viva Prime which is carried by Destiny Cable as well as in Thailand and several Southeast Asian countries. They will also be telecast on a delayed basis on the top-rated weekly boxing show ?The Main Event? over IBC 13 at 9:00 p.m on Sundays.

Domingo will be making the first defense of the Oriental title he won with a smashing second round TKO over rugged Indonesian Rivo Ringkung last July 26 also at the Cebu Coliseum. Domingo told www.insidesports.ph ?my name means Sunday and this is my day? while Vorapin promised to do his talking in the ring.

Domingo?s trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor said that after a three-day break following the title fight against Ringkung, Domingo ?didn?t take a rest and continued training.? He said Domingo sparred with some of the best including former world flyweight and later OPBF bantamweight champion Malcolm Tunacao, a southpaw like Vorapin, Z ?The Dream? Gorres another world-rated southpaw and several other tough fighters from the ALA Gym.

Vorapin who is a 31 year old veteran with a record of 73-10 with 49 knockouts lost by an eighth round TKO to WBO champion Gerry Penalosa in a title fight last April 6 at the Araneta Coliseum and gave Penalosa a tough time before Penalosa established his mastery of the Thai whom he had beaten in a WBC International super flyweight title fight at Casino Filipino in Paranaque on November 25, 2000.
