Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says its only the revenue split that ?The Golden Boy? Oscar De La Hoya wants that has so far stalled agreement on a planned December 6 showdown against Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao.
The 70-30 revenue sharing proposal of De La Hoya was first disclosed by www.insidesports.ph, Viva Sports and Manila Standard Today at a time when the talk centered on Pacquiao?s demand for a 60-40 share. When it was first revealed, Pacquiao's lawyer Franklin "Jeng" Gacal confirmed the story when he said "I think that is it" even as he indicated it was not acceptable to Team Pacquiao.
In an overseas telephone conversation with us, Arum said ?all this stuff about the gloves, about the weight, that?s all crap. That?s all been agreed to. There?s only one real issue and that?s the split of the revenue.?
He said De La Hoya had agreed to fight at 147 pounds and ?they have agreed to use 8oz gloves.?
Talk of Pacquiao wanting to wear 8oz gloves while De La Hoya would wear 10oz gloves floated by the Pacquiao camp was branded as ?nonsense? both by Arum and World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman because it cannot be done under the rules.
However, Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer said if both fighters agree, they could use 8oz gloves.
Arum pointed out ?you can have different makes but it has to be the same weight.? He said that in his last three welterweight fights including Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto, the fighters used 8oz gloves.
Arum disclosed that a planned meeting between Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and De La Hoya which was scheduled for Monday didn?t push through because he had heard from Schaefer?s office that he was ill and the meeting may take place tomorrow (Tuesday in the US.)
Arum said ?we want to have this done by this week ?because he would want to start a press tour right after US Labor Day which is the first Monday in September.
The astute promoter drove home the point that ?the fighters that fight got to be satisfied with the deal.? Arum said Schaefer has ?got to get Oscar to agree to the proposal that hopefully would be acceptable to Manny and myself. That?s what we are working for.?
Arum said he had a fallback position just in case they don't reach an agreement on a Pacquiao-De La Hoya fight. He said Humberto Soto "is lined up and ready" even as he warned that Pacquiao "cannot take Soto for granted. He is a very strong fighter."
