World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman says Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao must announce by July 28 ?which title he has decided to keep? between the lightweight title he won with a smashing 9th round KO over David Diaz last June 15 or the super featherweight crown he won with a split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez last March 15.
Sulaiman informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that should Pacquiao decide to relinquish the lightweight title and keep the super featherweight title, Pacquiao must defend the 130 pound belt against Humberto Soto with the winner mandated to defend against Francisco Lorenzo.Pacquiao is almost certain to decide to retain the lightweight title since he has been struggling to make the super featherweight limit.
Sulaiman also reported that the WBC officially confirms its decision of a ?No Contest? in the highly controversial super featherweight interim title fight between Soto and Lorenzo in which Soto was disqualified by referee Joe Cortez after he claimed Soto punched Lorenzo at the back of the head when he was down.
Sulaiman who was angered by the Cortez decision which he termed ?most unfair? which deprived Soto of the interim title after what Sulaiman said was a ?tremendous performance.? However, he conceded that the decision by the board of governors was the least controversial possible.?
