Glenn Donaire, the elder brother of IBF flyweight champion Nonito he Filipino Flash? Donaire failed in his bid to avenge the defeats of countrymen Rodel Mayol and Bert Batawang when he dropped a unanimous decision in a title fight against IBF champion Ulises ?Archie? Solis in Hermosillo, Mexico Sunday.
In a close and competitive fight where Donaire was the aggressor and landed the harder punches the three judges once again gave credence to the fears of a hometown decision in Mexico with two judges scoring an obscene shutout and the third judge also scoring it for the champion.
Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene noted that referee Pat Russel deducted a point from Solis for a headbutt however ?the final score didn?t reflect as such ? quite frankly they didn?t even suggest that all three judges bothered to objectively score the bout.? Donovan said Solis prevailed by ?bizarre scores? and suggested that the final tally may have been read wrong.
Even in the main event where Julio Cesar Chavez scored a controversial split decision over Matt Vanda where the deciding scorecard was a shutout for Chavez 100-90 which was described as ?obscene.?
A headbutt, according to Donovan, left Solis ?cut and discouraged but instead decided to box and move his way to victory.?
With his gallant effort to create history by winning the title and joining younger brothers and IBF flyweight champion Nonito falling short, the elder Glenn has nothing to be ashamed of. If anything, the judges should be ashamed of themselves which once again raises serious questions of competence and integrity which the world boxing organizations need to address.
With the loss Donaire drops to 17-4-1 with 9 knockouts while Solis who inflicted TKO defeats on Donaire?s countrymen Rodel Mayol who lost by an 8th round TKO and Bert Batawang who lost by a 9th round TKO, improved to 27-1-2 with 20 knockouts.
Both fighters suffered cuts but not bad enough for referee Russell to stop the fight.
Prior to the fight Nonito Donaire told Viva Sports he was confident Glenn would win the world title claiming that despite Solis? TKO wins over Mayol and Batawang he was not a hard puncher and was the one who wouldn?t be able take his elder brother?s best shots.
