The promotional engine for the July 25 showdown between Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. and Tim “The Phoenix” Tszyu has officially shifted into redline. Following weeks of remote banter and weight dispute negotiations, the two elite middleweights finally crossed paths in person on Tuesday night at a glamorous Sydney Harbour Grand Arrivals launch—and the atmosphere was pure ice.
Over the past 24 hours, what was once billed as a high-stakes athletic clash has rapidly devolved into a tense personal grudge, complete with refused handshakes, sharp verbal barbs, and a major career declaration from Australia's premier boxing star.
The Handshake Snub & Sydney Harbour Staredown
Tensions exploded early Tuesday afternoon during a pre-arrival sit-down interview with broadcast host Ben Damon. Upon conclusion of the taping, Spence rose, shook Damon’s hand, and blatantly snubbed Tszyu’s extended hand before walking off set. To make matters sharper, the former unified welterweight king made it abundantly clear that the disrespect wasn't just for television: he suggested there would be no post-fight handshake, either.
Later in the evening, against the backdrop of fireworks and a packed Sydney crowd that included NRL stars and broadcast analysts Shawn Porter, Paulie Malignaggi, and Danny Green, the two fighters met on the red carpet for an extended, silent face-off.
While fireworks exploded behind them, neither fighter uttered a word or cracked a smile.
"He's a bit rattled," Tszyu quipped to media members shortly after the face-off. "He's never had a liking for me anyway... Doesn't bother me, man. We’re not going to be friends and that's alright. We're here to punch on. It's a fight, not a dancing contest."
When asked if Spence's mental tactics were designed to make him emotional, Tszyu brushed it off with a smile: "I'm not emotional, man. I'm so locked in... But half the words he says, I can't understand him anyway. Give me subtitles."
Tszyu Drops Middleweight Bombshell: "Super Welterweight Days Are Over"
While the psychological mind games dominated the red carpet, the biggest strategic bombshell of the last 24 hours came directly from Tszyu regarding his future weight class.
Following the Spence camp's successful request to push the bout up from a 158-pound catchweight to the full 160-pound middleweight limit, Tszyu revealed that his decade-long run at 154 pounds is officially finished.
"I will be moving to middleweight permanently," Tszyu confirmed to Fox Sports Australia. "This is my first fight there. I've been doing 154 for 10 years. Just bring him here—I'll say yes. Doesn't bother me. And this could be the start of something new at middleweight."
Rumors are already circulating throughout Sydney that should Tszyu prevail against Spence on Sunday morning (Saturday evening in U.S. primetime), his team is eyeing a immediate shot at WBA Middleweight Champion Erislandy Lara, positioning Tszyu for a fast track to becoming a two-division world champion.
Permanent Partnership: Jeff Fenech Locked In
Tszyu also took the opportunity during Tuesday’s media scrum to address his training corner, confirming that Hall of Famer Jeff Fenech will remain his head coach for the rest of his career.
"That's it, man—to the end of my career," Tszyu stated. "What I've gained from Jeff, words can't describe it. I'm forever in debt to him."
Tszyu noted that he has experienced this specific level of hyper-focus only twice before in his 30-fight professional tenure: "There are three fights where I've been this locked in—Jeff Horn, Tony Harrison, and Errol Spence. It’s a different feeling and I just can’t wait to get in there."
The Betting Line: Too Close to Call
Bookmakers in both Australia and Las Vegas reflect the razor-thin margin separating these two former world champions. DraftKings and DAZN Bet currently list the bout as a dead-heat pick 'em (20/23 on both sides), underscoring the massive uncertainty surrounding Spence’s three-year ring layoff versus Tszyu’s adaptation to the 160-pound frame.
With press conference obligations scheduled for Thursday and the official weigh-in set for Friday, the stage inside Afterpay Arena is set for one of the most volatile, unpredictable international blockbusters of the year.
