GM Joey Antonio is set to defend his titles at the upcoming sixth Gov. Henry S.Oaminal Chess Championships

Manila---Thirteen-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. is set to defend his titles at the upcoming sixth Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Chess Championships.
The tournament is scheduled for July 11-12, 2026, and will be held at Ozamis City Gymnasium, Misamis Occidental.

Antonio enters the tournament coming off a stellar medal haul at the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships in Penang, Malaysia, where he was the most bemedalled Filipino player with 8 medals (including 4 golds).

He also won the gold medal of the blitz event of the World Seniors Chess Championships held at the Grand Hotel Costa Brada in Gallipoli, Italy.

He also won a silver medal in the III International de Ajedrez Cap Negret Chess Championship at the Hotel Cap Negret, Altea, Alicante, Spain.

He also won a silver medal in the Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

"I hope to perform well and gain some elo rating points," said the 64-years-old Antonio.

Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre will give the inspirational remarks, along with Misamis Occidental Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Sr. ,Cong. Henry “Indy” Oaminal, Jr. , Cong.Sancho Fernando “Ando” Oaminal and Ozamis City Mayor Sam Norman Fuentes during the colorful opening ceremony.

Joining them are GM Antonio, National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) director and Asenso Misamis Occidental Chess Association (AMOFCA) president AGM Rey Urbiztondo, NCFP CEO/Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales, GM Daniel Quizon and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna.

Dubbed as Asenso Ozamis coincides with the celebration of the Ozamis Charter Day, the country’s top and aspiring players will then take the center stage in the individual (Open, Highschool and Elementary), and team tatluhan rapid tournament where a total pot of P500,000 will be up for grabs in four categories.
"The biggest Mindanao Tournament of the year with P 500,000 cash prizes.

The legacy continues for the 6th Governor Henry S. Oaminal Chess Festival and Asenso Ozamiz Charter Open Chess and the First Tatluhan Chess Team Tournament on July 11-12, 2026 at City Gymnasium, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental. A FIDE Rated Tournament," said Engr. Urbiztondo.

Meanwhile, the opening program will start with the simul exhibition of the following:

GM Torre vs. Ozamiz City Officials,
GM Gonzales vs Misamis Occidental Executives,
GM Antonio vs High School non Misamis Occidental players,
