It has been learned unofficially that NBA members met last Wednesday at the Capitol to discuss the NBA's relationship and current situation with sports betting companies, following the recent federal indictments of Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and others.
It has been reported that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver did not participate, nor did any sitting members of Congress.
It is known that Senator Ted Cruz, Republican chairman of the Commerce Committee, and Senator Maria Cantwell, the committee's top Democrat, have previously commented on the Rozier case, but have questioned the NBA's procedures regarding these accusations and have insisted on knowing what measures the NBA will take to demonstrate that it is in control and thus maintain fan confidence.
Rozier allegedly conspired with others to help them win bets based on his statistical performance in a March 2023 game.
A House committee has also requested information from the NBA regarding several issues related to potential loopholes or manipulations of existing regulations that could allow for illegal betting schemes.
The NBA has stated that it prefers federal regulation of sports betting over the current model, in which each state decides its own regulations.
