Sumabong is new WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight champ

BOHOLANO Joseph “The Hunter” Sumabong is the new WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight champion after he beat via unanimous decision Takero Kitano of Japan last October 21, Tuesday night at the Korakeun Hall.

Filipino judge Edward Ligas and Japanese Katsuhiko Nakamura scored it 96-93 and Koji Tanaka saw it 97-92 all in favor for Sumabong.

The 23-year-old Sumabong improved his record to nine wins with four knockouts against one defeat while Kitano suffered his second loss against nine wins with one draw,

Sumabong earlier won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth minimumweight title by knocking out Cebu’s John Kevin Jimenez in the 2nd round last December 17, 2024 in Naga City.

He also beat Joperson Trazo by a unanimous decision for the Philippine Youth minimumweight title last July 6, 2025 in Tagbilaran City.
