PH PRIDE: Filipino chess master wins in Malaysian Seniors Open Chess Championship

Angelo Abundo Young, a Filipino International Master in chess, won in the Dato Tan Chin Nam International Seniors' Open Chess Championship last Sunday, September 21, 2025 in KL Gateway Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Young successfully finished a 9 round Swiss System tournament.
With 7.5 points in 90 minutes and 30 seconds increment time control format.

He defeated Joon Hoong Chay of Malaysia in the second round, FIDE Master Ahmad Ismail of Malaysia in the third round, Soi-Hock Lee of Malaysia in the fourth round, International Master Chee-Meng Jimmy Liew of Malaysia in the fifth round, Alvin Pulley of the USA in the sixth round and International Master Peng Kong Chan of Malaysia in the seventh round.

He split the points with the National Master Edmundo Gatus of the Philippines in the first round, Candidate Master Helen Milligan of New Zealand in the eight round and Kian Hwa Lim of Malaysia in the ninth and final round.

"I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and thanks to the people who have always been there for me. NCFP chairman/president Prospero "Butch" O. Pichay Jr. and NCFP CEO GM Jayson O. Gonzales," said Young, 1982 PH Junior Chess Champion.
Young won the gold medal followed by Gatus and Lim, who got the silver and bronze medals who tallied 6.0 points apiece.-Marlon Bernardino-
