VM Sotto, City Council Recognize GM Joey Antonio

A special recognition was awarded to Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., one of the pillars of chess in the Philippines, during the QC Council session held on September 15th. GM Joey Antonio was honored after winning the Gold Medal in the Senior Event of the 23rd ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships 2025 held in Penang, Malaysia, the 2025 Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championship, held in Australia, and the Battle of Champions held in Ozamis City.

This achievement is an honor for Quezon City, a testament to GM Antonio's continued excellence and dedication to the field of Chess. He once again demonstrated his prowess on the international stage, carrying the Philippine flag to the peak of success.

Quezon City Vice Mayor Gian Sotto and the QC City Council led the awarding of the honor to GM Joey Antonio.

Also present at the affair were Quezon City Sports Development Office Director Mr. Jun Gayoso and Filipino and US master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., GM Joey's coach and media representative.

The 13-time Philippine Open chess champion, GM Joey, will be seen at the 33rd FIDE World Senior Chess Championships in Gallipoli, Italy from Oct. 20-Nov. 2 and at the III Open International de Ajedrez in Alicante, Spain from Nov. 8 to 16 with NM Bernardino.

The Europe chess campaign of GM Antonio and NM Bernardino is supported by QC Mayor Joy Belmonte, QC Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, and the QC Council.-Marlon Bernardino -
