WORLD sambo multi-medalist Sydney Sy Tancontian of Davao City is the Female Awardee of the 2025 Sports Hero of the Year.

Her younger brother Chino is also the Male Awardee of the Sports Hero of the Year.

They are both members of the Philippine Sambo Federation Inc., which is headed by their father Paolo Tancontian.

Sydney earned the award for winning the bronze medal in the +80kg of the 2025 Grand Prix de Sambo de Paris held in Paris, France last June.

Sydney hopes to become a world champion before she ends her career.
She has won multiple medals for the sport, including a pair of bronze medals in the world championships, and remains active in giving honor to the country in various international tournaments.
Sydney also won the World Sambo Cup in Armenia last June,
Sydney has claimed the top spot in the world in sport sambo’s women’s +80kg division, according to the latest rankings released by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) last May.

Her rise to World No. 1 sees her leap an 11 spots, overtaking Kazakhstan’s former leader Arailym Abenova, who has now fallen to fifth.

Tancontian’s golden triumph at the Asia and Oceania Sambo Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, earned her a massive 600 ranking points, which, added to her silver medal from last year’s tournament in Macau, worth 120 points, brought her total to 720.
“Sydney has definitely lived up to her name as Asia's Sambo Queen by claiming the world number one ranking,” said Leonard Paul Palo of Southern Sports Digest.

The proud Davaoeña asserted her dominance on the mat, defeating heavyweights Maryia Kandratsyeva of Belarus and Olga Artoshina of Russia with determination and flair.
“She is truly an exceptional martial artist climbing from the ranks and from different forms like wrestling, judo and kurash,” said Palo.

“Sydney has made Davaoeños proud with her many accomplishments,” he added.
