GM Antonio gears up for 2nd JCI Senate Lipa Chess Festival

Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., a 13-time Philippine Open champion, is gearing up for an expected tough grind in the 2nd JCI Senate Lipa Chess Festival to be held on June 14 and 15, 2025 at the Lipa Academy of Sports Culture and Arts, Barangay Dagatan, Lipa City.

The 63-year-old Antonio said he will leave no stones unturned as he vowed to make a gallant stand in the annual tournament.
"I hope to do well in this event," said Antonio who is set to compete in the 2025 Asean Seniors Chess Championships to be held on July 1-11, 2025 in Penang, Malaysia.

Others joining in the Individual Open division with the winner getting the top purse of P35,000 are Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, International Masters Michael Concio Jr. , Ronald Dableo and Jose Efren Bagamasbd and FIDE Master David Elorta.

Organized by the JCI Senate Lipa headed by its President Gary Malabanan in close cooperation with Mayor Eric Africa, former Vice-Mayor Kuya Boy Manguerra and Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - PSME past president Engr. Roger Reyes, a total cash purse worth P354,000 plus trophies, medals and certificates will be given away to winners.

The event, in Celebration of Lipa City Foundation Day which is backed by LGU of Lipa, is also aimed at producing future talents.
“That’s the goal, to produce future champions and Grandmasters,” said UAE based Danny Reyes.

The 2-day rapid event features Open, Under-14, and Open Team Divisions.

Meanwhile, Mapua University, University of Santo Tomas, and University of Makati have confirmed their participation in the Open Team Divisions with the champion getting the lion share of P55,000.
