
Bernardino rules Sali Chess Blitz Ope

MAKATI CITY---National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. gave away a draw on his final assignment against Leo Penaredondo but still won the National Master Zulfikar Sali Blitz Open Round Robin Chess Tournament held at the New World Hotel in Makati City on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
Bernardino, a veteran sportswriter and radio commentator, finished with 6.0 points on account of 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses to rule the 10-man field and pocketed the P3,000 top prize.
Rounding up to the top 10 are IM Yves Ranola, Luffe Magdalaga, IM Chito Danilo Garma, Princess Nicole Atenta Ballete, Gilo Estrella, Christopher Megino, Ruther Barredo, Noel Jay Estacio and Leo Penaredondo, respectively.

I would like to thank National Master Zulfikar Sali for sponsoring to this 10-man field Blitz Open Round Robin Chess Tournament," said the 47-year-old Bernardino, who is set to compete in the 23rd ASEAN +Age-Group Chess Championships to be held on July 1 to 11, 2025 at the Main Ballroom of Berjaya Penang Hotel in Penang, Malaysia together with GM Rogelio Antonio Jr., IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad and IM Angelo Young upon the invitation of Malaysian Chess Federation Deputy President and Penang Chess Association President Atty. See Swee Sie and Mr. Ignatius Leong.
It shall be recalled that NM Bernardino won the Dugout 1594 Armageddon 8 Rapid Chess Tournament last January 31, 2025 at the Dugout 1594 Restaurant E.Rodriguez, Cubao, Quezon City.
He also won the Single Knockout Armageddon Tournament (SiKAT) last December 6, 2024 at the Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong City.
Bernardino also settled overall 7th place in the 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024 Chess Championship held from December 23-27, 2024 at the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (Georgetown) in Penang, Malaysia which attracted 105 woodpushers.
Bernardino is the coach and delegation head of the PH chess team who won 2 golds and 1 bronze medal in the 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship which was held at the Hotel Baleira, Porto Santo Island, Portugal from Nov. 16-29, 2024.
Bernardino achieved another remarkable victory by winning first place in the 3rd Laos International Chess Open 2024 held at the 2nd floor Parkson@ Naga Mall in Vientiane, Laos from September 1 to 6, 2024.
