Boxing promoter Bob Arum is reportedly aiming to stage a highly anticipated rematch between Emanuel Navarrete and Charly Suarez in Manila this October, coinciding with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the legendary "Thrilla in Manila" fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Arum, who has a long and storied history with Philippine boxing, expressed his desire to bring a significant boxing event to the Philippines during this nostalgic period.
While details are still being finalized, reports indicate that Arum's Top Rank Promotions is exploring the possibility of hosting Navarrete vs. Suarez 2 in Manila, providing a fitting backdrop for the commemoration of one of boxing's most iconic clashes. The original fight between Navarrete and Suarez resulted in a controversial decision that is currently under appeal, adding further intrigue to the potential rematch.
“It was clear that that after they reviewed, albeit late, the tape, it showed it was caused by a punch and not by a head butt,” Arum told Dan Rafael on Substack.
Arum added that regardless of what happens with Suarez’s appeal, or whether or not the WBO orders a rematch, he wants to do one and stage it in Manila. “Absolutely,” Arum said when asked if he was inclined to arrange a second fight. “What I’m working on, and I don’t know if I can pull it off, is October is the 50th anniversary of the ‘Thrilla in Manila’ and I’d love to go back to the same building, the Araneta Coliseum, which has now been remodeled, and do this fight in Manila as a celebration of the Ali-Frazier fight.”
Arum has previously waxed nostalgic about the "Thrilla in Manila," acknowledging its historical significance and the enduring passion of Filipino boxing fans. Staging a high-stakes rematch like Navarrete-Suarez 2 in the same city during the 50th anniversary celebrations would undoubtedly generate considerable excitement and attention both locally and internationally.
The potential timing aligns with earlier reports of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao's plans to stage a "Thrilla in Manila" celebration in October. While Pacquiao's specific involvement in Arum's proposed rematch is yet to be confirmed, the convergence of these events could create a memorable period for boxing enthusiasts in the Philippines.
The first encounter between Navarrete and Suarez ended in a unanimous decision victory for the Mexican champion, a result that sparked widespread debate and led to Suarez's camp filing an appeal. A rematch in Manila would offer Suarez a chance to avenge his loss on home soil and potentially claim the WBO super featherweight title. For Navarrete, it would be an opportunity to silence the controversy surrounding their first fight and solidify his reign.
Bringing such a significant fight to Manila would also be a major boost for Philippine boxing, showcasing the country's vibrant boxing culture and providing a platform for Filipino fighters on a global stage. As the 50th anniversary of the "Thrilla in Manila" approaches, Arum's plans for a high-stakes rematch add another compelling layer to the celebrations, promising a potentially electrifying night of boxing in the Philippine capital.

The "Thrilla in Manila," held on October 1, 1975, remains etched in boxing history as one of the most brutal and captivating fights ever contested. Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, two titans of the heavyweight division, engaged in a punishing third and final encounter in the sweltering heat of Manila. Their rivalry, already legendary after two previous epic battles, reached its zenith in a contest defined by relentless action, unwavering determination, and profound mutual respect forged in the crucible of combat. It was then-Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. who played a significant role in bringing this monumental event to Manila, recognizing the global spectacle and prestige associated with hosting such a high-profile sporting affair.
The fight lived up to its moniker, delivering a dramatic and grueling spectacle that pushed both men to their physical and mental limits. Ali ultimately emerged victorious after Frazier's trainer Eddie Futch controversially stopped the fight at the end of the fourteenth round, with Frazier's eyes swollen shut. The "Thrilla in Manila" not only cemented Ali's iconic status but also underscored the incredible heart and warrior spirit of Frazier.
As the 50th anniversary of this monumental event approaches, organizers are reportedly planning to involve the current Philippine President, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in the celebrations, acknowledging the historical significance of his father's role and the enduring legacy of the "Thrilla in Manila" for the nation.
Arum's potential staging of Navarrete vs. Suarez 2 during this commemoration would serve as a powerful echo of boxing's rich history in the country, bridging the past and present of the sport in the Philippines.
