
Antonio, Bagamasbad face tough competition in Woman FIDE Master Sheerie Joy Lomibao Open Rapid Chess Tournament on May 18

Manila -- 13-Time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and two-time Asian Senior Champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad expect rough sailing in the Woman FIDE Master Sheerie Joy Lomibao Open Rapid Chess Tournament to be held on May 18, 2025, Sunday, at the Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District (beside the MRT Shaw Boulevard station along EDSA) in Mandaluyong City. The tournament boasts a total prize pool of P105,000, with the champion taking the lion's share of P20,000.
The 63-year-old Antonio is fresh from runner-up honors, while the 68-year-old Bagamasbad finished third in the Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championships held from April 7 to 9, 2025, at the Melbourne Chess Club in Melbourne, Australia. Antonio also brought pride to the Philippines by finishing fourth in the Premier Division of the 2025 O2C Doeberl Cup Chess Championships Standard competition, held from April 17 to 21 in Canberra, Australia.
"I hope to do well in the Woman FIDE Master Sheerie Joy Lomibao Open Rapid Chess Tournament to be held on May 18, 2025," said Antonio.
"I will do my very best," said Bagamasbad.
Antonio and Bagamasbad, both residents of Quezon City, are set to compete in the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships from July 1 to 11, 2025, in Penang, Malaysia. They will also represent the Philippines at the FIDE World Seniors Chess Championships from October 20 to November 2, 2025, in Gallipoli, Puglia, Italy.
Also joining the Lomibao Open are IM Michael Concio Jr., IM Angelo Young, IM Ricardo de Guzman, IM Barlo Nadera, IM Rolando Nolte, IM Ronald Bancod, IM Chito Garma, WIM Kylen Joy Mordido, FM Giovanni Mejia, WFM Cherry Ann Mejia, and FM Christopher Castellano.
