
Antonio faces tough competition in World Engineering day

Manila---12-Time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., two-time Asian Senior Champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad and National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. expect rough sailing in the 3rd D' Engineer's Cup rapid chess tournament on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at the Koten Enterprises Inc. Corporate office, F.B. Harrison Street, Pasay City.
The one-day rapid event (armageddon format 10 minutes white and 9 minutes black time control format), backed by IIEE, offers P7,000 plus painting from Life 'N Arts to the champion and P3,000 to runner up. It is part of the Philippine Technological Council-World Engineering Day (PTC-WED) and National Engineering Month celebration.
The tournament director is IIEE National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez.
“It will be a very tough match against the Metro Manila players. Not to be outdone are players from the nearby provinces," said Antonio.
“We are expecting tough matches but we will try our best," added Bagamasbad.
Other Filipinos joining the competition are IM Chito Garma, IM Angelo Young, FM Narquingden Reyes, FM Noel Dela Cruz, NM Gerald Ferriol, NM Romeo Alcodia, Sherwin Tiu, Narquingel Reyes, Jeremy Marticio, Dr. Fred Paez and Reymond Ompod. To complete the 16 qualifiers, the top player of the champion and runner up in the team event will advance. There are 12 teams with 5 players each from Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines, Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers, Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers, Institute of electronic engineers, Philippine Society of Mining Engineers and teams from Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE) representing chapters of Singapore, Metro Central, Metro South, Metro East, Southern Laguna and Quezon.
Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, CIDG Director Nicolas Torre III, Santo Tomas, Pangasinan Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar, National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Board of Director Judge Gonzalo Mapili, Mr. Jeff Bugayong, Former Philippine Ambassador to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & Maldives Leo Tito Ausan Jr. and board of Electrical Engineering chairman Francis Mapile are invited to do the traditional ceremonial moves.
Meanwhile, Antonio, Bagamasbad and Bernardino are set to compete in the Australian chess circuit next month.
They will be competing in the 2025 Melbourne International Open be held from April 7-14, 2025 in Melbourne, the 2025 Doeberl Cup from April 17-21, 2025 in Canberra and the Sydney International Open Chess Championships from April 23 to 27, 2025 in Sydney.-Marlon Bernardino-
