AGM Bernardino impressed with local talents, lost 4 games in 1-day simul chess exhibition in Santo Tomas, Pangasinan

STO.TOMAS, Pangasinan---Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. was impressed by the talents of Pangasinueno chessers, having lost four matches and drew 3 games in his one-day 20 boards simultaneous chess exhibition in Santo Tomas, Pangasinan last Monday, February 10, 2025 dubbed as Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar chess festival, in line its 117th founding anniversary.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) board of director Judge Gonzalo Mapili said, "He was impressed by our chess players' enthusiasm and love for chess! He finds our youth and senior players very strong."

He forced deadlocks with Ronald Joy Medina, Alex Quibilan and Fernando Gazmen.

Bernardino, however, bowed to Rene Elias, Juan Fernandez, Rene Mangala and Cliff Aggasid Jr.

Bernardino, who hails from Binalonan, Pangasinan said he came to Santo Tomas, Pangasinan to grant an invitation for him to do a simultaneous chess exhibition.

It shall be recalled that Bernardino, a certified Filipino and United States chess master, eked out 11 wins and lost one at 3rd floor Executive Building in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan last January 11, 2025 upon the invitation of Sportsman/Engineer Ernesto "Snooky" Salcedo III, who is also the Vice Mayor of Pozorrubio.

The 47-year-old Bernardino, a veteran sportswriter and a radio commentator will represent the country in the Melbourne International Open 2025 to be held in Melbourne, Australia from April 7-14, 2025 and the Sydney International Open 2025 to be held at Sydney, Australia from April 23-27, 2025.

"I would like to thank Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar, Vice Mayor Timoteo 'Dick' Salazar Villar III and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) board of director Judge Gonzalo Mapili for inviting me to do a 20 boards simultaneous chess exhibition here in Santo Tomas, Pangasinan dubbed as Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar chess festival, in line its 117th founding anniversary," said Bernardino, the 2024 Laos International Chess Champion.

Judge Mapili, meanwhile, thanked Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar and Vice Mayor Timoteo 'Dick' Salazar Villar III, for supporting Bernardino's visit and exhibition games.

Also supporting the Mayor Dickerson Dauz Villar chess festival who came for Santo Tomas, Pangasinan to witness the said chess event, which aims to promote chess in the grass roots level are Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez, Engr. Eric Fernandez, Engr. Analyn Carig Fernandez,Tarlac Chess Organizer Henry Calacday, National Master Romeo Alcodia, Candidate Master Genghis Imperial, Rod Sulit and youthful James Henry Calacday.

Sto. Tomas also holds the Guinness world record for the longest barbecue for setting up 3,803.96 meters of interconnected grills in Feb. 11, 2008. A total of 3,500 cooks grilled 93,540 pieces of corn.
Sto. Tomas also holds the Guinness world record for the longest line of tables. The town set up an uninterrupted line of tables six kilometers long on April 2, 2017. The feat bested the record of 4.3 kilometers held by Alexandria, Egypt.-Marlon Bernardino-
