Manila--Asia's first grandmaster and chess hall-of-famer Eugene Torre will be the guest of honor during the opening via zoom of the 3rd conference of Association of Chess Amateurs of the Philippines Inc. (ACAPI) dubbed as C/Insp. Diosdado C. Morales Jr. Memorial Chess Team Tournament on Friday, December 20,2024, 7 PM.

Sponsored by the Vice President for External Engr. Dohjie Morales, a grassroots online chess development league with guaranteed 3 conferences in a year held at online platform chess.com.

Last conference had 22 teams of 500 players for 6 categories: Seniors, Open, High School, Elementary, Female and PWDs.
First conference dubbed the President's Cup was sponsored by AGM/ Engr Rey C. Urbiztondo, ACAPI President with Panabo as Over All Champion.

Second conference was sponsored by Executive Vice President Atty. Jong Guevarra with Davao Durianburg as overall champion. The most familiar was the upset win of Surigao Diamond Knights versus the highly favored defending champion Cebu Madridejos in the Seniors Division.

Meanwhile, Engr. Urbiztondo, a certified online Arena Grandmaster, stressed the need to promote chess especially among the youth while facilitating the development of the players' skills and confidence.

"Part of providing support to our athletes is giving them the opportunity to see the people who inspire them," Urbiztondo said, adding that the players will get the chance to meet Torre via zoom meeting.

Torre was the first in Asia to earn the GM title in 1974.
He had played for the Philippine Olympiad team 23 times, winning three individual medals on board one: silver in Nice (1974) and bronze medals in Malta (1980) and Dubai (1986).

In the just concluded FIDE World Chess Championship held in Singapore recently, Torre is a member of the Appeals Committee.-Marlon Bernardino --Marlon Bernardino -
