
32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championships: Team Philippines wraps up successful campaign with 2 golds and 1 bronze medal

Porto Santo Island,   Portugal---Team Philippines wraps up its successful 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championships campaign with 2 golds and 1 bronze medal.
It was held at the Hotel Baleira in Porto Santo Island, Portugal from November 17 to 28, 2024.
International Master Chito Danilo Garma of Sampaloc, Manila claimed the gold in the Blitz 50+ category with an impressive 8-1 record, while FIDE Master Mario Mangubat of Minglanilla, Cebu topped the Rapid 65+ category, scoring 4.5 points out of 6 games.
Mangubat also took the bronze in the Blitz 65+category with 5.5 points.
In the standard time control format, Garma finished overall 24th place out of 80 participants in the 50 and above category, Bagamasbad ended up 46th place while Mangubat landed at 48th place in the 65 over category which attracted 89 woodpushers.
PH delegation head and coach was NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
The Filipino chessers' campaign is being supported by the Philippines Sports Commission headed by chairman Richard Bachmann, commissioner Edward Hayco, commissioner Olivia "Bong" Coo, National Chess Federation of the Philippines Chairman/ President Cong. Prospero Pichay Jr., CEO/Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation chairman Alejandro "Al" Tengco.-MB-
