Quizon places 6th in Abu Dhabi

Manila---Filipino International Master Daniel Maravilla Quizon (2457) downed Indian Grandmaster Narayanan, SL (2649) to score 7 pts. in 9 rounds & tied for first in the 30th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival-Masters at the St. Regis Abu Dhabi Corniche Hotel in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday. He ended up in 6th place after the tie breaks.

The Dasmariñas athlete finished with seven wins and two losses after nine rounds in one of the toughest tournaments Quizon joined.

Quizon was in for a strong finish after placing sixth along with five other participants after round nine, which included eventual champion Grandmaster Yakubboev Nodirbek of Uzbekistan, 2nd place Grandmaster David Paravyan of Russia, 3rd place Grandmaster Shamsiddin Vokhidov of Uzbekistan, 4th place Grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca of India and 5th place Grandmaster M. Amin Tabatabaei of Iran.

Quizon rated 2457, had a performance rating of 2749 beating 4 strong GMs along the way. He gained an additional rating of 33.3 and just needs to up his rating to 2500 to become a full pledge Grandmaster. He improved to 2490 from 2457. He also got GM results or GM norms for his efforts.

"We tried to bring home the bacon. However after the ninth round, when the tie break rules were applied, natalo tayo sa tie break. Pero I'm happy with my performance at nag gain tayo ng Elo rating points at ng panibagong GM results," said the 20-year-old child prodigy whose stint was being supported by Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Coun. Kiko Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.
Quizon is part of the Philippine team to the FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary on Sept. 10 to 22.

Other members of the team are GMs Julio Catalino Sadorra and John Paul Gomez and IMs Paolo Bersamina and Jan Emmanuel Garcia. GM Eugene Torre will serve as coach.

It shall be recalled that Quizon is fresh from winning the PCAP Champions Tour was held at the new and posh South Wing Atrium of the Greenhills Shopping Mall last July.-Marlon Bernardino-
