IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire says he may see action on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito WBA welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand on July 26 or the Joshua Clottey ? Zab Judah battle for the vacant IBF welterweight title in the Palms Casino on August 2.
However, Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today has learned that a fight on the August 2 card was more likely. In fact boxrec.com has already listed Donaire on the undercard of the Clottey-Judah fight. Judah is the same fighter who lost to reigning WBC lightweight champion David Diaz in a box-off for the 1996 Olympic Games.
Donaire said that as of now there were ?no names? but things are expected to clear up when his manager Cameron Dunkin holds a news conference along with Donaire this week in Las Vegas so they could take advantage of the presence of several Filipinos in Vegas for the Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz WBC lightweight title fight on June 28.
There's been talk that since Donaire obtained his release from promoter Gary Shaw he would be promoted by Top Rank's Bob Arum but he said nothing has been firmed up as yet. However, the fact that Donaire will fight on either of the two cards being promoted by Top Rank indicates the leanings towards Arum.
Donaire who will be at the Pacquiao-Diaz fight said Pacquiao ?has a lot of speed and with that alone he can beat Diaz.? However, Donaire said Diaz is a bigger man and may be able to absorb the punches of Pacquiao, the reigning WBC super featherweight champion.
Donaire also said Pacquiao is ?a lot stronger? than Diaz but that the lightweight champion was aware of this.
The world flyweight champion who also hails from Pacquiao?s hometown of General Santos City said there was a possibility that Pacquiao will ?take him out early? but said whatever the outcome it would be a good fight.
