IM Quizon captures 2nd Gov Oaminal chess title

Ozamis City---Grandmaster elect and International Master Daniel Quizon of Dasmariñas, Cavite ruled the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the AYA Hotel and Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental on Wednesday here.

Quizon held off International Master Michael Concio Jr. of Dasmariñas, Cavite to a draw in the ninth and final round of the tournament held in the celebration of the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Anniversary and feast of Nuestra Sra. dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi, is organized by Asenso Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association in coordination with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental.

Quizon, a member of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under mayor Jenny Barzaga and Coun. Kiko Barzaga, had a total of 7.5 points (six wins and three draws) and bagged the PHP100,000 top purse.

"I am happy to have won the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament. I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament," said the 19-year-old Quizon, who needed to raise his live standard rating 2460 to 2500 to complete his GM title status.

Concio, Grandmaster Darwin Laylo of Dasmariñas, Cavite and International Master Eric Labog Jr. of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya placed second, third and fourth with smilar 7.5 points to receive P60,000, P40,000 and P20,000, respectively.

NM Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga City and Rodney Opada of Ozamis City scored 7.0 points each while FM David Elorta of Manila, Johnnel Balquin of Cagayan de Oro City, Nazario Ubanan of Cagayan de Oro City, Michel Jackson Ambuang of Dipolog City, FM Roel Abelgas of Dasmariñas, Cavite , Abdelmunim Hassan of Jolo, Sulu, AGM Julius Dan Augustine Ablin of Iligan City, Jeriel Manlimbana of Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Johnny Wellem Carzano of Tangub City have identical 6.5 points.

Meanwhile, Quarl Maverick Vera Cruz of Balingoan, Misamis Oriental and NM Keith Adriane Ilar of El Salvador, Misamis Oriental topped the Elementary and High School division, respectively to take home P60,000 each.

No Less than Asia's First Grandmaster and World Chess Hall of Fame Eugene Torre and Tournament Director Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo led the closing rites in this 2-day (July 9 and 10) chess tournament, backed up by Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Henry Oaminal, Jr. and Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal.

"The event is aimed at developing good thinkers through the understanding of chess strategies and tactics, improving the logical abilities and rational thinking and reasoning of the participants, and instilling a sense of self-confidence, self-worth and camaraderie," said Engr. Urbiztondo, an online Arena Grandmaster and director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines under the leadership of its chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr.

Chief Arbiter was Ronald Solon while Deputy Arbiter is Lorenzo Cuizon Jr. assisted by arbiters Regie Marfil and Jose Glenn Aleria.-Marlon Bernardino-
