Manila---In an amazing display of grit and never-say-die attitude, the RP Blu Girls defeated Czechia, 4-3, during the 2024 Canada Cup International Softball Championship Playoffs on Saturday in Surrey, British Columbia.
The game initially seemed lost for the Cebuana Lhuillier-backed team, with the Czech team holding a formidable 3-0 lead by the 5th inning. Czech pitcher Pekava was in top form, striking out at least 14 players from the RP Blu Girls.
The comeback began to unfold for the Philippines during the 7th inning when batter Victoria Magbanua from Talisay City stepped up. Magbanua delivered a crucial hit that resulted in a stunning three-run home run, tying the game at 3-3. This unexpected turn of events shocked the Czech team, leading to several mistakes from them afterwards.
During the final inning with the Czechs pitching and all their bases loaded, the tension was palpable. Angelou Gabriel, who had earlier dropped two pop-ups in foul territory, redeemed herself spectacularly. Gabriel caught the final hit from Czechia, securing a miraculous comeback victory for the RP Blu Girls.
Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) President Jean Henri Lhuillier expressed his immense pride and excitement upon hearing the news. “The RP Blu Girls are truly remarkable! This is what happens when a team refuses to give up and continues to believe in each other! I am incredibly proud of the girls. Good job, RP Blu Girls!”
The Philippines is set for another match tomorrow in the 2024 Canada Cup, with their opponent still to be determined later.-Marlon Bernardino-
