Who's who in Philippine Chess set for OTB duel

Ozamis City---The 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament has attracted the names considered as who's who in Philippine Chess.

Organized by Asenso Misamis Occidental Fiderated Chess Association (AMOFCA) in coordination with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental, 2nd Congressional District Office and Local Government Unit of Ozamis, it will be held on July 9-10, 2024 at AYA Hotel and Residences, Clarin, Misamis Occidental here.

Headed by Dasmariñas Chess Academy players Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, International Master Daniel Quizon, International Master Michael Concio Jr., FIDE Master Roel Abelgas and National Master Mar Aviel Carredo, around 300 participants are expected to compete in the 2-day National Chess Federation of the Philippine (NCFP) sanctioned tournament, backed up by Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, held in the celebration of the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Anniversary and feast of Nuestra Sra. dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi, which offers at least P355,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners of the FIDE rapid rated competition.

Other early entries are defending champion International Master Joel Pimentel, International Master Eric Labog, International Master Rolando Nolte, International Master Ronald Bancod, International Master Rico Mascarinas, International Master Kim Steven Yap, National Master Joey Florendo, National Master Rommel Ganzon and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.

The open champion will pocket P50,000. The second to sixth placers will take home P30,000, P20,000, P10,000, P5,000, and P3,000, respectively, while 7th to 10th placers will receive P2,000 each and 11th to 20th placer will pocket P1,000 each.
There will also be prizes P30,000 each for the winner in the top High School (under 17), Top Elementary (under 13) and Top Misamis Occidental.

Special category prizes worth P3,000 each for the Top Senior (60 above), Top Junior (20 below), Top Lady (U17), Top Lady (U13) and Top Lady (Open).

No less than Asia's First Grandmaster and Hall of Famer Eugene Torre will do the ceremonial moves that includes Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Henry Oaminal, Jr. and Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal.

This event is a great opportunity to showcase your skills and compete against other talented players,” said Tournament Director Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo, an online Arena Grandmaster, who is also a board of director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
