
International Master (IM) Michael Concio Jr. wins the 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament

San Carlos City---International Master (IM) Michael Concio Jr. won the 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the Marina Park, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Sunday here.
Concio tallied 8.5 points to claim the PHP54,000 champion's purse and a trophy in the nine-round Swiss system tournament, jointly organized by San Carlos City LGU and sportsman/businessman Henry Silva.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to the late (Cavite 4th District) Cong. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas,” the 18-year-old Information Systems freshman at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas in Cavite province said.
Concio defeated Nina Dela Torre in the first round, Trine Olmedo (2nd), Edsel Vosotros (3rd), Melito Ocsan Jr. (4th), NM Edsel Montoya (5th) Kevin Arquero (6th) GM Darwin Laylo (7th), and FM Alekhine Nouri (8th).
He drew with Michel Jacson Ambuang in the ninth and final round.
IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia from Manila, received PHP20,000 for finishing second while third placer Nouri took home PHP15,000.
Laylo ranked fourth, followed by Chin Lim, Ambuang, Arquero, Montoya, FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca and NM Rommel Ganzon.-Marlon Bernardino-
