Rotary International District 3820 Open Rapid chess tournament set June 8 in Sto. Tomas, Batangas

Manila---Rotary International District 3820 will hold a fundraising tournament billed as RI District 3820 Open Rapid chess tournament on June 8 at the SM City, Santo Tomas, Batangas.

Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo has registered in the Open division of the event that aims to provide free eyeglasses (with eye disorders) to 300 students of Pulong Sta. Cruz Elementary School in Santa Rosa.

US Master Rodolfo "Jun" Panopio Jr., National Master Efren Arguelles, Arnel Pinero and Engr. Bren Sasot are also joining the National Chess Federation of the Philippines-sanctioned FIDE rated tournament using a seven-round Swiss system format applying 15 minutes plus five seconds delay.

The champion in the Open division will be awarded PHP15,000 in cash and trophy, while the second placer will receive PHP10,000 and trophy, while the third placer will get PHP7,000 and trophy. The fourth (PHP5,000), fifth (PHP3,000) sixth (PHP2,000) and 7th to 15th (PHP1,000) will receive medals.

Special prizes worth PHP1,000 and medals for the top Executive, top Senior, top Kiddies, top Lady, top 2000 & Below, top 1900 & Below, top 1800 & Below, top Unrated and top Batangas Player.
Registration fee is P500.

Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez invites avid chess enthusiasts to join the tournament open for Filipinos and foreigners.

"We do this to promote chess at the grassroots level and to discover future chess talents and champions," said Dr. Paez.
