Quezon City, Cavite advance to PCAP Quarter Finals

The Quezon City Simba's Tribe and the Dasma Cavite Spartans reached the Northern Division quarter-finals of the 2024 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess tournament after beating their elimination foes held at Chess.com Platform on Saturday, May 11.

The Simba's Tribe survived a tough challenge from Isabela Knights of Alexander, 11-10, while the Cavite Spartans defeated Cagayan Kings, 15-6.

“We were pushed to the limit by Isabela, but good thing our players stepped up in the rapid play,” said playing coach Michaela Concio, former top player of University of Santo Tomas during her College days.

“It was a tough win for us,” exclaimed Simba's Tribe playing team owner Danilo Ponay.

This is the first time that the Quezon City Simba's Tribe advanced to the knockout stages of the Northern Division.
Freddie Talaboc, NM Raymond Salcedo, Michella Concio, Eduardo Tunguia and Joseph Navarro played a vital role in Simba's Tribes’ rapid triumph over the Knights of Alexander.

Talaboc defeated FM Noel dela Cruz (Board 1), Salcedo subdued NM Marc Christian Nazario (Board 2), Concio drew with Melizah Ruth Carreon (Board 3), Tunguia upset NM Gerardo "Gerry" Cabellon (Board 4) and Navarro crushed Lordwin Espiritu (Board 6).
Ricky Echala (Board 5) and Alvin Aguinaldo (Board 7) carried the fight for the Knights of Alexander after beating Francis Talaboc and Paulo Cristobal, respectively.

The Quezon City Simba's Tribe yielded to Isabela Knights of Alexander during their blitz encounter, 2-5, but came back strong with a 9-5, triumph in the rapid play.

Meanwhile, the Dasma Cavite Spartans bested Cagayan Kings, 6-1, in the blitz game and 9-5, in the rapid play.

The Cavite Spartans once again relied on the exploits of Kevin Arquero (Board 1), GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Board 2), FM Carlos Edgardo Garma (Board 4), Alfredo Rapanot (Board 5), Alexis Emil Maribao (Board 6) and Renie Malupa (Board 7) to beat the Cagayan Kings in the blitz game.

WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego, Garma, Renie Malupa and Maribao won their respective matches in the rapid play while Antonio contributed a draw.

"Cagayan is a strong team. We were just lucky for beating them tonight. It was indeed a tough match," said Dasma Cavite Spartans coach Benjie Bercadez.

The Quezon City Simba's Tribe are set to tangle with the Manila Indios Bravos in the two-leg Northern Division quarter final round slated on Wednesday evening, May 15.

The Dasma Cavite Spartans are also to play with the Cagayan Kings in the knockout stage.

San Juan Predators and the defending champion Pasig City King Pirates are waiting in the Northern Division semifinal round after 1-2 finish in the grueling elimination round.

In the Southern Division, Surigao versus Iloilo while Davao vs Tacloban for the quarter final while Camarines and Toledo are waiting in the Southern Division semifinal round after a 1-2 finish in the elimination round.

PCAP, the country’s first and only play-for-pay league, is headed by President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and Treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal.-Marlon Bernardino-
