Filipino sprinter John Cabang sets PH record anew

Filipino sprinter John Cabang showed that he is peaking at the right time by setting a new national record in the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) Philippine Athletics Championships 2024 at the Philsports Oval in Pasig City on Wednesday, May 8.

The Spain based Cabang clocked an impressive 13.37 in the 110m hurdles that puts him just 0.1 seconds away from the Olympic Qualification standard.

The 22-year-old Cabang improved on his previous national record of 13.53, showcasing his dedication and skill in the sport.
SEA Games Champion Clinton Kingsley Bautista (Navy), who has topped the 110m hurdles in the SEA Games with victories in 2019 and 2021, finished second with a time of 13.98. Liu Huu Long of Hong Kong took the bronze in 14.35, while Timmothy Okolo, representing FEU, clocked 14.73 for fourth place.

Janry Ubas gained around 10 to 15 Olympic qualifying points after winning the men's long jump.

The SEA Games champion leaped 7.83 meters for the gold medal of the event participated in by 34 jumpers. The win is expected to send Ubas back to the Top 32 of the World Athletics Road to Paris rankings. He is set to compete in Japan on May 12 then in Europe for four more meets.

Elijah Cole of FilAm Sports retained his men's pole vault title after clearing 4.90 meters.

With the title under his belt, he cleared 5.05 and 5.20 meters before failing at 5.35 meters which would have been a new personal best. Hokkett Delos Santos of the national team took silver at 4.60 meters.

Filipino-American Yacine Guermali topped the men's 5,000m event to claim the first gold medal.

He notched a best time of 14:18:83 among 58 runners, with national team mainstay Sonny Wagdos (14:54:95), and Spectrum Runners Philippines Team's Noli Torre (15:05:00) finishing second and third, respectively.

"My hard work paid off," said the 24-year-old Guermali, who studied business administration at the Gonzaga University, where he also earned a Master’s degree.

“It feels good, good run today, so beautiful,” added Guermali, who holds the Philippine record of 13:50:74 he set at the Oregon State University High Performance meet on April 30, 2021.
“I am so happy to be here, competing for the first time. It is a tough event no matter what the climate is,” last word of Guermali.

The five-day event (May 8-12, 2024), organized by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association -PATAFA headed by it's President Terry Capistrano and Secretary-General Jasper Tanhueco in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission-PSC backed up by International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
