Manila---International Masters (IMs) Angelo Abundo Young and Ricardo de Guzman of the Philippines are set to compete at the Vietnam GM/IM chess tournament 2024 from May 13 to 26.

Young and De Guzman are both eyeing a possible GM norm result in the Vietnam GM/IM chess tournament 2024 to be held on May 14-19 at the Quiang Ninh Exhibition of Urban Planning Expo, Ha Long Ward, Ha long City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam and the another Vietnam GM/IM chess tournament 2024 on May 21-26 at the Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange, Center, Hanoi, Vietnam.

"I will do my very best for the flag and country," said the Tondo, Manila resident Young, who is also an 8x Illinois, USA state champion.

"I hope to perform well," added Cainta, Rizal based de Guzman, a former Asian junior champion.

Young and De Guzman played for the Philippines in the Asian Chess Team Championship in Genting Island Malaysia in 1989.

De Guzman is a product of the GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. School of Chess who inspired generations of Filipino chess players. The late Balinas is best remembered as the 1976 Odessa International Tournament champion becoming only the third foreign player at that time to win an international tournament inside the Soviet Union since world champion José Raúl Capablanca did it in Moscow in 1936 and GM Reuben Fine's wins in Leningrad in 1937 and Moscow, also in 1937. -Marlon Bernardino-
