
Quizon, Maribao power Cavite past Toledo in PCAP chess tilt

Manila---Grandmaster elect and International Master Daniel Quizon and Alexis Emil Maribao powered the Dasma Cavite Spartans to a 12.5-8.5 victory over a IM Kim Steven Yap-led Toledo-Xignex Trojans in the clash of the league titans in the PCAP All-Filipino Conference Wednesday night, April 24.
Quizon, the reigning National Open champion, defeated Allan Pason in blitz and International Master Joel Pimentel in rapid while Maribao toppled Bonn Rainauld Tibod in their blitz showdown and Pason in their rapid encounter to help propel the Spartans to jump solo second place with 14-2 win-loss records in the Northern Division.
“I am happy with my performance tonight,” said Quizon, who needed to raise his 2460 Elo Standard rating to 2500 to complete his GM title status.
“IM Daniel Quizon and Alexis Emil Maribao played very well and won the match,” said coach Benjie Bercadez.
Also delivering for Cavite were International Master Michael Concio Jr., Kevin Arquero, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido and FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.
Concio subdued Yap in blitz, Arquero routed Chin Lim in blitz, Antonio notched a draw (blitz) and a win (Rapid) against International Master Rico Mascarinas, Mordido split the point with Woman Fide Master Cherry Ann Mejia in blitz, and Abelgas drew with Tibod in rapid.
The Dasma Cavite Spartans bested Toledo-Xignex Trojans in blitz portion, 4.5-2.5, as well as in the rapid format, 8-6.
Earlier, the Dasma Cavite Spartans smashed Tacloban Vikings, 20.5-0.5.
Prince Richvil Mella, meantime saved the day Tacloban for a possible shut-out loss after halving the point with Abelgas in the blitz competition.
Meantime, San Juan Predators defeated Negros, 17-4, and Tacloban Vikings, 19-2, to remain on top in the Northern Division with a 15-1 slate.
Toledo shared first to second places with Camarines Soaring Eagles in the Southern Conference with a 12-4 mark.
PCAP, the country’s first and only play-for-pay league, is headed by President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and Treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal.-Marlon Bernardino-
