Manila---FILIPINO International Master (IM) Daniel Maravilla Quizon drew nearer to becoming a full-fledged grandmaster after clinching his third and final GM result at the conclusion of Hanoi GM3 chess tournament at the Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Center in Hanoi Vietnam on Sunday, March 31.
Quizon tallied 7.0 points on six wins, two draws and one loss of the possible nine while earning a tournament performance rating of 2604, or good enough for a GM result.
Actually, Quizon took the title by virtue of a higher tie break points against fellow seven pointers IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh.
It was Mr. Quizon’s third norm after his first two from the Eastern Asian in South Korea and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia events.
The last norm, however, would still need the final stamp of approval from FIDE before it could become official.
To date, Quizon’s live rating is 2460 and needed to breach the 2500 barrier to complete his GM title status.
To get an GM title, a player must achieve three required title norms over 27 or more games and a FIDE rating of 2500 or more.
"I am happy with my latest achievement. I will work even harder to get the full-pledge Grandmaster title," said the 19-year-old Quizon, top player of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the watchful eyes of coaches FIDE Master Roel Abelgas, Grandmaster Darwin Laylo and Candidate Master Chester Caminong.
" IM (Daniel) Quizon needed to join at least six FIDE standard tournaments to reach the 2500 mark," added Coach Abelgas.
Among those who are supporting his chess campaign here and abroad are mayor Jenny Barzaga and rep.Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr.
Quizon opened his campaign with a draw over IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh and a loss to FM Banh Gia Huy of Vietnam in the second round and followed it up with victories over Saxena Apaar of India (Round 3), IM Dao Minh Nhat of Vietnam (Round 4), FM Ethan Vaz of India (Round 5), FM Namitbir Singh Walia of India (Round 6) and GM Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam (Round 7).
He split the point with GM Vojtech Plat of Czech Republic in Round 8 before beating GM Bui Vinh of Vietnam in the ninth and final round.
It shall be recalled that Quizon won the Philippine National Chess Championship at the Marikina Community Convention Center last January 7.
With the feat, Quizon pocketed the top purse worth P120,000 and one of the three slots to the national team plunging into action in this September’s FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.-Marlon Bernardino-
