Manila - The Dasma Cavite Spartans try to pick up the pieces of their shattered pride as they take on the San Juan Predators and the guest team Pasig Grassroots when the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess team tournament resumes.

How the Cavite woodpushers bounce back from a major setback will be put to the test against the powerhouse of San Juan and the guest team, Pasig Grassroots on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. through the Chess.com Platform. Cavite fell to the defending champion Pasig City King Pirates, 6.5-14.5, on Wednesday night, March 27, for its first loss in the meet and evened its record at 2-1 in the Northern division.

Pasig beat Cavite, both in blitz (4.5-2.5) and rapid (10-4) despite top board player IM Michael Concio Jr. defeating GM Mark Paragua, both in blitz and rapid. Cavite drubbed the Rizal Batch Towers in the opener, 18.5-2.5. They also beat Olongapo, 21-0, last Wednesday before losing to the Pasig City King Pirates.

Manila and Isabela are both tied on top with similar 3-0 records. Manila bested Quezon City, 13.5-7.5, Cagayan, 19-2, and Rizal, 17.5-3.5, respectively while Isabela routed Cagayan, 12-9, Rizal, 11.5-9.5, and Olongapo, 16-5, in order.

"We move on, we go to the next game, and then be prepared," said coach Benjie Bercadez. Bercadez fielded Joel Delfin and Patrick Bonifacio against Pasig Grassroots that added a strong lineup for Cavite.

"Everybody was chipping in and doing their parts and I’ll do my part not to let my teammates down," Delfin referring to IM Concio (Board 1), Kevin Arquero (Board 2), WIM Kylen Joy Mordido (Board 3, lady player), GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., senior player) and homegrown IM Daniel Quizon (Board 5), FM Roel Abelgas (Board 6), and NM Raymond Salcedo (Board 7).

"I will not waste the support given by Sir Israel Landicho and Coach Benjie Bercadez who trust in my ability," added Bonifacio, one of the top players of Tarrasch Knight Chess Club.

In the Southern division, Camarines makes it three wins in a row by beating Surigao and Iriga with similar 14-7 scores while Toledo remains undefeated by beating Iloilo, 15-6, and Mindoro, 18-3.

The Engr. Jojo Buenaventura backed Camarines edged Davao, 11-10, in the opener while Toledo got a bye. PCAP commissioner Paul Elauria said there will be no scheduled game on Black Saturday, March 30. - Marlon Bernardino-
