Chess Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. played a crucial role in the victory of the PTC World Team over the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE) team during their exhibition match at Koten Enterprise in Pasay City last Sunday, March 24. The event was part of the World Engineering Day celebration, sanctioned by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and involved 13 engineering professional organizations in the Philippines.

GM Antonio scored 20 points, including three 3-pointer shots, in a separate basketball game.

In the on-board chess games, Michael Palma of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) edged out International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) in a tie-break after both players scored 5 wins and a draw against each other for a total of 5.5 points.

Jellie Ann Magro of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) placed 3rd overall with 4.5 points and was also the top female performer. Her sister, Judie Ann Magro, scored 3.5 points and contributed to the IIEE team championship, along with Edmund Garma Daluddung and Raymond Sales Roces, who each scored 4 points. The IIEE team narrowly edged out PSME with a final score of 11.5 to 11.

Other players in the top 10, all scoring 4 points, were Marx Zed Aguila (Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers - PICE), Arjoe Loanzon (IECEP), Charles Sison (IECEP), Jonathan Junio (PSME), and Chester Concordia (IIEE).

The chess event also included a recognition ceremony for GM Eugene Torre. Jeff Bugayong, CEO of Shimmer and Shield Car Coating, delivered an appreciation speech highlighting Torre's contributions to the national and international chess scene, including his distinction as the first Asian Grandmaster and his induction into the World Chess Hall of Fame. -Marlon Bernardino-
