Leron rules GMG Rapid Chess Tournament

MANILA---Noel Leron ruled via tiebreak the GMG Rapid Chess Tournament at the Barangay Hall of Luna-Candol in Gubat, Sorsogon last February 17, 2024.

Leron, tied for first-second places with Marlon Lumberiio 6.5 points apiece in the 15 minutes time control event organized by Gubat Chess Club Incorporated and backed up by Thailand based coach National Master Gerald Ferriol. With the highest tie break points, Leron took the title while Lumberiio finished second.
Noel's path to victory saw him outmaneuver a formidable lineup of opponents. He defeated Cena Mae Elem Enteria (round 1), Shain Ashley Col Cheng (round 2), Merylle Col Abejero (round 3), Leo Col Almonte (round 5), lawyer Lawrence Earl Roy Gersalia (round 6) and Danilo Bon (round 7).He drew with Lumberiio in the fourth round.

"We do this to promote chess at the grass-roots level and discover future chess talents," said coach Ferriol, a former top player of the University of Santo Tomas chess team during his College days.

Meanwhile, GMG Rapid Chess tournament goes to Robinson's Galleria Malls, Ortigas in Quezon City on March 23 and to Tigaon Sports Complex in Tigaon, Camarines Sur on April 6.-Marlon Bernardino-
