The Los Angeles Clippers were back at home after a successful four game road stint. They were looking for a home win to break away from a 4-team logjam on top of the Western Conference.
But they fell, 117-106 to the visiting New Orleans Pelicans who were on the first of their own road assignment moving them half a won game behind OKC, Minnesota and Denver.
It could have been fatigue catching up on the Clippers (34-15) as their last two road games were back to back hard fought affairs versus Miami Heat and the Atlanta Hawks.
Taking advantage of LA's lethargic start, the Pelicans starring CJ McCollum established a 36-19 lead in the first quarter.
James Harden and Norman Powell led a fight back to cut the deficit to seven 48-55 as Kawhi Leonard struggled and Paul George had an off night.
But Zion Williamson who had just two points in the first half, suddenly came alive starting the third quarter to push the Pelicans further ahead. Harden again led Clippers rally and cut the deficit to manageable level by the end of the third quarter.
Harden turned cold in the fourth quarter as Leonard continued to find his shooting touch and McCollum preceded to finish the Clippers.
For the Pelicans, McCollum topscored with 25 and Williamson added 21 with support from Brandon Ingram 15 and 8 rebounds, Trey Murphy and Herb Jones with 13 markers each while Dyson Daniels chipped in 10. Before he went out with injury, center Jonas Valenciunas had 8 points and as many rebounds
Harden led the Clippers with 19 followed by Normal Powell 18, Leonard 15, Ivica Zubac 12 and Mason Plumlee with 10. George managed to score only 7 points in the loss.
It was the Pelicans' fourth straight win which snapped the Clippers string of home victories.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 127-104 extending the latter's string of losses to three straight and six in eight games since losing ace center Joel Embiid to injury.
The loss dropped the 76ers record to 30-20 and their placing to 5th in the East just 1.5 won games ahead of the 6th Indiana Pacers.
The Warriors were led by Andrew Wiggins with 21, Jonathan Kuminga and Klay Thompson with 18 points each. Stephen Curry chipped in 8 points in limited action.
The 76ers were led by Rodney Council IV with 17 and Tobias Harris with 15. Usually high scoring Tyrese Maxey scored only 12.
