Christian Araneta sets his sights on the world title fight with a first-round knockout victory over Arvin Magramo. Araneta of Borbon, Cebu scored two knockdowns, the second one caused the stoppage at 1:50 into the very first round of their IBF junior flyweight title eliminator last Friday at the NUSTAR Resort Cebu Convention Center in Cebu City.

Araneta became the mandatory challenger for the winner of the Adrian Curiel-Sivenathi Nontshinga IBF junior flyweight title fight rematch on February 16 in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The match had Araneta immediately going for the aggressive offensive. Magramo of Parañaque City defended himself rigorously but Araneta landed an uppercut to send Magramo to the canvas for the first time in the opening round.

Magramo (17-2-1, 11KOs) was able to beat the count. But Araneta quickly followed it up with vicious combinations. A left hand and right hook knocked Magramo down again on the floor, which prompted referee Danrex Tapdasan to stop the fight.

Araneta (24-2, 19KOs) won his fifth straight bout. He failed in his first two world title eliminators. On September 7, 2019, Araneta lost to Daniel Valladares by a fourth round stoppage in their IBF light flyweight title eliminator in Mexico after suffering a shoulder injury. Valladares later went on to win the IBF strawweight title.

Two years later on April 24, 2021, he lost to Sivenathi Nontshiga by a controversial unanimous decision in South Africa in the same world title eliminator. Nontshinga went on to win the IBF junior flyweight title in his next fight but lost the belt in his first defense in a shocking one-punch first-round knockout to Mexico City’s Curiel (24-4-1, 5KOs) last November in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The IBF approved an immediate rematch, and the Curiel-Nontshinga winner is expected to be ordered to next face Araneta in a mandatory title defense.

The Mavericks needed nearly every one of the points in a 148-143 win. The score tied Wilt Chamberlain and David Thompson for the fourth-most scored in a single game in NBA history.

Sports History: January 28, 1974. In the second fight of their legendary trilogy, Muhammad Ali beat Joe Frazier by 12-round unanimous decision at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Their other two fights were for the world heavyweight championship, this second one was for Ali’s North American Boxing Federation title. It was Frazier’s second fight after losing his heavyweight belt to George Foreman.
