Talented big men Joel Embiid and Karl Anfhony Towns (KAT) put up monster numbers with contrasting results and implications in the leaderboard in the Eastern and Western Conference of the ongoing NBA 2023-24 season.
Embiid scored a season high 70 points to lead his Philadelphia 76ers to a 133-123 home win over the San Antonio Spurs keeping the 76ers within distance of the East and league leading Boston Celtics which also won early today as the season winds down to the final half of games.
Meanwhile, Towns tallied a season high 62 points in an unfortunate 125-128 loss at home by his team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, to the Charlotte Hornets reducing the T-Wolves (30-13) lead in the West by mere half a won game over the OKC Thunder (29-13) and defending champions Denver Nuggets (31-14).
Embiid also snagged eight rebounds and issued five assists as he outplayed Spurs 7-4 super rookie center Victor Wembanyama while getting ample support from Tyrese Maxey (18 points), Tobias Harris (14 points) and Kelly Oubre and Danuel House who each chipped eight points.
The win keeps Philadelphia four won games behind Boston which also won 119-110 on the road against the Dallas Mavericks with Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown combining for 73 points. The Milwaukee Bucks retain second place three and a half won games behind the Celtics as the Bucks likewise won on the road 122-113 over the Detroit Pistons with Giannis Antentokoumpo scoring 31 markers.
Towns kept the Timberwolves competitive against Charlotte but he failed to get adequate support from twin tower brother Rudy Gobert (13 points, 11 rebounds) and the rest of his teammates especially Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels who were both limited to 9 points.
The Hornets were bannered by rugged power forwards Miles Bridges and Brandon Miller who combined for 55 points and steady support from guards Lonzo Ball (18 points) and Terry Rozier (11 points) and center PJ Washington (12 points, 7 rebounds). Guard Nick Smith Jr contributed 8 points in the limited time he was fielded in.
