MANILA, Philippines -- No less than 8-time Illinois USA champion International Master Angelo Abundo Young will be the guest of honor when the Atty. GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open Youth Rapid Chess Tournament (18 below) gets underway on Saturday (January 13, 2024) at Level 1 Digiworld, Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas Center, Quezon City.

Young, overall 8th place in the 2019 Bucharest, Romania World Seniors Chess Championships, will deliver the inspirational remarks at the opening ceremony of the one-day Bayanihan Chess Club tournament.

Young is also expected to make the ceremonial move together with Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE) National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony P. Alvarez and Bayanihan Chess Club co-founding chairman Engr. Antonio Carreon Balinas. Coach Ederwin Estavillo, UAE-based Danilo Reyes, Samson Kevin Legaspi Cantela, Bong Buto, and other chess supporters are also invited to attend the opening ceremony.

“IM Angelo Abundo Young is the perfect choice to be our guest speaker, since most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol, aside from our very own GM Wesley So, Asia's First GM Eugene Torre, and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna,” said Bayanihan Chess Club founding president NM Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr.

The chess tournament is held in honor of Atty. GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr., Philippine Hall of Fame nomination. Balinas was a lawyer by profession, as well as an award-winning chess writer and journalist. Balinas achieved his greatest victory at the 1976 Odessa International Tournament, winning with a 10–4 score. Balinas was undefeated against all Soviet opponents and a point ahead of Lev Alburt, and former Soviet champion Vladimir Savon.

The event, sponsored by GM Balinas' family in close cooperation with Robinsons Galleria, AIM Mark John Centillo, Biyaherong Arbiter, Coach NM Gerald Ferriol, GMG, WNM Kathryn Ann Cruz-Hardegen, Mam Jennifer Cruz, Chess Lovers, and Kaizen Knights Chess Club, offers a total prize pool of P25,000, with the champion getting the lion's share of P5,000. The tournament registration fee is P500. Send your payment to gcash number: 09613396015 (Jolina Icao). -Marlon Bernardino-
