Laoag City, Ilocos Norte ---FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri of City San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan reigned supreme in the Laoag City Open Chess Championship 2023 at the Ilocos Norte National High School gymnasium in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on Saturday, December 23, 2023.
Nouri, a product of the chess development program of World Boxing Champion and NCFP Vice President Manny Pacquiao, finished the 9-Round Swiss System tournament with 7.5 points, the same output of International Master Barlo Nadera of Malabon and Marc Francis Balanay of Santa Marcela, Apayao.
Nouri’s superior tie break points earned him the championship trophy edging IM Nadera and Balanay, respectively, but the total P90,000 cash prize for the first, second and third places was divided by the top 3 finishers (each of them received P30,000).
Entering the final round carrying a 6.5 points, FM Alekhine defeated his father International Master Hamed Nouri in 34 moves of English Opening, IM Nadera edged NM Lorenzon Aaron Cantela of General Trias City, Cavite in 43 moves of Gruenfeld defense while Balanay toppled Alfredo Rapanot of Cagayan de Oro City in 48 moves of Torre Attack Opening.
“Right now, I am currently tired, it’s been a long week. But I’m happy to come out on top, it’s definitely a confidence-booster heading to my first tournament of the year in Robinson Ortigas in a week’s time.” said FM Alekhine, one of the favorites to win the upcoming GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Rapid Youth Chess Championship to be held on January 13, 2024 at the Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas, Quezon City.
The Laoag City Open Chess Championship 2023 was supported by Mayor Michael Marcos Keon , 102nd Homecoming UP Vanguard Incorporated (UPVI) Chairman Aldwin Galapon, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Pag-Ibig Fund , the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and International Arbiter Ricky Navalta.-Marlon Bernardino-
