Ferrer beats Tamayo to keep lead at Queen of the North Chess Tournament

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte---Precious Eve Ferrer of Lingayen, Pangasinan defeated Shaniah Francine Tamayo of Laoag City to remain at the helm after Round 8 of the Queen of the North chess championship Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Ilocos Norte National High School gymnasium in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

The third seed Ferrer prevailed over the fourth seed Tamayo in 50 moves of London System Opening using the black pieces to improve to seven points to keep her grip on the top spot in the eleven-round Swiss system tournament with the champion getting the lion share of P60,000 courtesy of Mayor Michael Marcos Keon and Chairman of 102nd Homecoming UP Vanguard Incorporated (UPVI) Aldiwn Galapon. It is also supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Pag-Ibig Fund and the Philipppine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

"Mahirap yung posisyon sa una, may pagka drawish buti nakuha ko sa tiyaga at naipit ko sya para manalo ako," said Ferrer.

Top seed Woman National Master Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian of Flora, Apayao defeated 15th seed Crishelle Angelica Dequillo of Laoag City in 38 moves of Modern defense to score 6.5 points, the same output of second seed Jallen Herzchelle Agra of Claveria, Cagayan, winner over 16th seed Hazel Claire Ganasao of Laoag City. Agra bested Ganasao in 23 moves of English Opening.

With the loss, Tamayo was stuck at 5.5 points. Also with 5.5 points is 24th seed Rachelle Joy Pascua of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, who drew with 20th seed Kimberly Gumallaoi of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte in 66 moves of Sicilian defense.-Marlon Bernardino-
