Filipino IM Daniel Quizon on track for third GM norm

MARIKINA CITY---Filipino International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon is still on track to earn his third and final Grand Master (GM) norm in the 11th edition of Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 at the Grandmaster Eugene Torre Museum of Pan de Amerikana in Concepcion Dos, Marikina City on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.
Quizon halved the point with countryman International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the fifth round, then edged compatriot Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the sixth round.
The result kept Quizon undefeated with one win and five draws and has 3.5 points for a share second to fourth place with two others entering the final three rounds.

The same group included Grandmaster Tuan Minh Tran of Vietnam who drew with Woman International Master Miaoyi Lu of China and International Master Paulo Bersamina of the Philippines, who split the points with countryman International Master Michael Concio Jr.

“Sana mahawakan ko ‘yung momentum ko tungo sa third GM norm,” said the 19-year-old freshman student at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS), whose local and international chess campaign is backed up by Dasmariñas City, Cavite Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and National Coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.
"Mabigat pero gagawin ko lahat ng makakaya ko sa last 3 rounds," added Quizon, who is also a former national champion, is working on formalizing his GM status.

Quizon's last 3 rounds are Bersamina (Round 7, Thursday), Miaoyi (Round 8, Friday) and Concio (Round 9, Saturday), respectively.
National Arbiter Mark John "Biyaherong Arbiter" Centillo had something to say: "Malaki pag asa ni IM (Daniel) Quizon na makuha ang kanyang 3rd and final GM norm."

Quizon earned his first GM norm when he finished champion in the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship in South Korea that also gave him an outright IM title in 2018. He obtained his second GM norm during the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023 held at the Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia last Friday.

Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia assumed the solo lead with 4.5 points after routing GM Antonio in the fifth round, then drew with Grandmaster John Paul Gomez in the sixth round.
International Master Joel Banawa of the United States, Concio, Garcia and Gomez are tied for 5th to 8th places with 3.0 points each.

Antonio was stuck at 2.0 points while Miaoyi at cellar dweller with 1.0 point.

The champion in the week-long FIDE Standard tournament jointly organized by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol of Kamatyas Chess Club will receive $4,000 while the second placer to fifth placer will have $2,000, $1,000, $800 and $700.
