Cantela draws; Bacojo, Arca lose in Italy chess

Montesilvano, Italy---Filipino FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo, FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca and National Master Oscar Joseph Cantela posted contrasting results in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship (Round 9) on Wednesday being held at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy.
The Barangay San Juan Uno, City of General Trias pride Cantela drew with Kobe Smeets of the Netherlands in 73 moves of Caro-Kann Defense, Bacojo lost to IM Aleksey Grebnev of Russia in 53 moves of Reti Opening while Arca yielded to David Akhmedov of Russia in 37 moves of London, System Opening, Jobava System.
The win raised Cantela’s total score to 4.5 points good for a tie for 61st place in the Boys under-16 section.
Bacojo remained at 6.5 points, and was dropped into a tie for 6th to 10th places in the Boys under-18 section while Arca was stuck at 6.0 points, and was tied at 17th to 30th places in the Boys under-14 section.
Dubbed as the ABC of Philippine Chess, Arca goes up against CM Kenneth Hobson of England, Bacojo versus CM Chakraborty Mayank of India and Cantela opposite Lorenzo Fava of Italy.
In other matches, Mark Gabriel Usman split the point with Max Poljan of Croatia and Charly Jhon Yamson was beaten by Ado Mesic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Usman got 4.5 points while Yamson had 3 points in the Boys under-14 section.
In the distaff side, WNM Franchesca Largo drew with WCM Stefania Sipos of Hungary, WNM Kaye Lalaine Regidor lost to WFM Maria Siekansa of Poland , WNM Bonjoure Fille Suyamin bowed to Lala Huseynova of Azerbaijan, Jirah Floravie Cutiyog was beaten by Ghosh Saparya of India, Anica Shey Dimatangihan yielded to Karol Bertuzzi of Italy and Maureinn Lepaopao lost to Elena Boaron of Italy.
Largo 4.0 points, Girls under 18; Regidor 5.5 points, Girls under 16; Suyamin 5.5 points, Girls under 14; Cutiyog 4.0 points, Girls under 14; Dimatangihan 3.0 points, Girls under 14; and Lepaopao 2.0 points, Girls under 14.
The Filipinos' campaign in Montesilvano, Italy is backed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
It is also supported by Cavite Vice Governor Athena Bryana Delgado Tolentino, General Trias City, Cavite Mayor Luis "Jon Jon" Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Porto Labuguen and OIC City Sports Jon Jon Comandante. -Marlon Bernardino-
