International Master Daniel Quizon will gamble his luck by competing against other world renowned athletes in the upcoming Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 to be held on December 9-17, 2023 at the Pande Amerikana, Concepcion Dos, Marikina beside GM Torre Chess Museum.
Quizon, the pride of Dasmariñas City, Cavite, is hunting to become the 18th Filipino GM in line with other well-known Pinoy GMs in the country like Eugene Torre, Mark Paragua, and Wesley So.
Earlier, Quizon earned the third norm following his golden performance in the premier Open Under-20 standard division of the 21st ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand last June.
It was Quizon’s third norm after his first two from the Eastern Asian and AQ Prime events.
However, World Chess Federation (FIDE) regulations say Quizon need one more round robin tournament whose current FIDE rating is 2417, plus he also need to reach the 2500-rating plateau to barge into the country’s elite GM club led by Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre.
"Kailangan ko pa manalo ng isang round robin tournament at mapataas ang FIDE rating 2417 ko tungo sa 2500 para sa full pledge GM title," said Quizon.
International Master Michael Concio Jr. (Elo 2403 ) another GM title aspirant is also taking a part in this FIDE weeklong standard tournament hosted by IM Roderick Nava and NM David Almirol Jr. of Kamatyas Chess Club in close cooperation with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Concio clinched his first of three GM norm plus an outright IM title after winning the Eastern Asia Juniors Chess Championships held at the Lima Hotel in Tanauan, Batangas in 2019.
"Sana maging maganda performance namin ni Daniel (Quizon)," said Concio who is also from Dasmariñas City, Cavite.
Other invited players are WIM Miaoyi Lu (2281 CHN), IM Joel Banawa (2414 USA), IM Paulo Bersamina (2428 PHI), IM Emmanuel Garcia (2403 PHI), GM Susanto Megaranto (2495 INA), GM Tran Tuan Minh (2484 VIE), GM Wei Ming Kevin Goh (2471 SGP) and GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (2386 PHI).
Quizon, Concio, WIM Kylen Joy Mordido (1 WGM norm), FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca (Gold medal winner, Open Blitz side event of World Youth Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy) and FM Mark Jay Bacojo (Bronze medal winner, Open Blitz side event of World Youth Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy who is also earned IM norm) are members of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy led by Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach FM Roel Abelgas.-Marlon Bernardino-
