Filipino FIDE Master Mark Jay Daños Bacojo earns second IM norm

Montesilvano, Italy---Filipino FIDE Master Mark Jay Daños Bacojo scored an impressive victory against Armenian International Master Emin Ohanyan to earn his second International Master norm after eight rounds of the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship on Tuesday at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy.

The Dasmariñas City-based wood pusher prevailed with the black pieces in 43 moves of Caro-Kann Defense to earn a score of 6.5 for a three-way tie in second place in this FIDE Standard Tournament, organized by UNI Chess headed by Italian Grandmaster Roberto Mogranzini.

The Grade 12 student from Dasmariñas Integrated High School capped his performance with six wins, one loss, and one draw in the tournament that is open to all players ages 18 years old and below.

Bacojo shared the same 6.5 score with IM Aldiyar Ansat of Kazakhstan and FM Tymon Czernek of Poland.

IM Aleksey Grebnev of Russia defeated IM A R Ilamparthi of India in 39 moves of Benko Gambit Defense to keep the solo lead with 7.5 points.

Bacojo got a Performance rating of 2591 and added 52 Elo rating points under his belt.

Bacojo who holds a 2335 Elo rating points earn his first of three IM Norms during the 18th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September.
