Cutiyog wins anew, climbs to 1st

MONTESILVANO, Italy – Jirah Floravie Cutiyog of the Philippines notched her second straight win on Tuesday and vaulted to joint first in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy.

Showing the form that made her the PH chess prodigy, Cutiyog handled the white pieces with precision to tame Zuzanna Gaszka of Poland in 42 moves of Caro-Kann Defense, Advance variation and raise her total to 2.0 points after second rounds in the Girls under-14 section.

The General Trias City bet Cutiyog whose stint here is being supported by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Mayor Luis "Jon Jon" Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Porto Labuguen, OIC City Sports Jon Jon Comandante and Vice Governor Athena Bryana Delgado Tolentino, will face Woman Candidate Master Bozhena Piddubna of Ukraine in the next round.
“I really feel good about my game,” said Cutiyog.

"Naalagaan ko yung isang pawn na lamang matapos siyang magsakripisyo sa opening," she added.

General Trias City Chess Club President and Coach Ederwin Estavillo said "Pumasok sa preparation natin. Linya sa chess yan na ginagamit ni Filipino Wesley So," FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo scored his second straight win in the Boys under-18 section when he outplayed FIDE Master Tymon Ochedzan of Poland in 63 moves of Sicilian defense, Alapin variation.

"Mahirap yung position buti nakuha sa tiyaga," said Bacojo, playing under the guidance of Dasmariñas Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas who earn his first of three IM Norms during the 18th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September.

FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca settled for a draw with FIDE Master Gustas Morkunas of Lithuania in moves of Caro-Kann Defense Exchange variation to post his 1.5 points in the Boys under-14 section.

Arca gained the upper hand position in the 25th moves but failed to convert to victory after his Lithuanian counterpart had solid play in the following moves.

However, not as fortunate were Woman National Master Kaye Lalaine Regidor and Woman National Master Franchesca Largo who dropped their second round matches.

Regidor yielded to Woman Fide Master Erdenebayar Khuslen of Mongolia in 44 moves of Sicilian Defense, Alapin variation in the Girls under-16 section while Largo succumbed to Jana Sosovickova of Slovakia in 42 moves of English Opening in the Girls under-18 section.

Following a first-round loss, National Master Oscar Joseph Cantela bounced back in the Boys under-16 section outwitted Alessandro Gallina of Italy so did as Woman National Master Bonjoure Fille Suyamin subdued Saadhika Bagley of the United States in the Girls under-14 section.

Meanwhile, Anica Shey Dimatangihan bowed to Ani Avetisyan of Armenia in the Girls under-14 section, Maureiin Lepaopao was beaten by Samyukta Sivashankar of Luxembourg in the Girls under-14 section and Mark Gabriel Usman lost to Miraziz Kuziev of Uzbekistan in the Boys under-14 section.

Charly Jhon Yamson got bye in the second round of the Boys under-14 section.

Completing the PH age group chess team who also backed up by NCFP Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., NCFP CEO GM Jayson Gonzales and POC President and Mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino are Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. (Head of Delegation and Coach) and Woman FIDE Master Shania Mae Mendoza (Coach).-Marlon Bernardino-
