
Cavite extends winning streak in PCAP online tourney

The Cavite Spartans continued its momentum after extending its winning streak to eight games in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament being held at Chess.com Platform on Saturday, November 4.
They currently have an 13-3 win-loss record in the Northern Division standing following a 11.5-9.5 beating of Toledo-Xignex Trojans and a 17.5-3.5 triumph over Iloilo Kisela Knights.
Pasig City King Pirates still on top with a 16-0 slate following a 16.5-4.5 win over NegOr SAGAR Sports and a 17-4 demolition against Davao Durianburg Stallions.
San Juan Predators (14-2), on the other hand, maintained their number 2 position with a 18.5 -2.5 victory over RCM Cebu Niños and a 19-2 win over NegOr SAGAR Sports.
After losing the blitz game against Toledo-Xignex Trojans, 5.5-1.5, the Cavite Spartans bounced back in the rapid event, 10-4, on full points by GM Aleksey Sorokin (Board 1), FM Carlos Edgardo Garma (Board 4), Alexis Emil Maribao (Board 6) and Kevin Mirano (Board 7) and a split by GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Board 2) and WIM Bernadette Galas (Board 3).
"It was a good pair of victories for us. We just have to keep our team at the upper part of the Northern Division standings," said Antonio, who drew with FM David Elorta of Toledo in the blitz game.
"We had a tough time against Toledo in the blitz but good thing we were able to recover in the rapid game," said Michael Metrio, who brought down IM Rico Mascarinas of Toledo in the blitz portion.
Against Iloilo in the rapid event, Anatoly Pascua, Sorokin, Galas, Antonio, AGM Voltaire Marc Paraguya, Mirano and Maribao joined forces beating NM Rolly Parondo Jr, NM Fritz Bryan Porras, Jovelyn Sepaton, NM Cesar Mariano, Mark Jossel Mariano, Horizon Villanueva and NM John Michael Silvederio, respectively.
Earlier, Cavite and Iloilo settled 3.5-3.5 in the blitz category.
Sorokin, NM Rommel Ganzon and Rene Malupa provided the full points while Antonio Almodal III drew his game.
PCAP, the country’s first play-for-pay league, is headed by PCAP President Atty. Paul Elauria, chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, PCAP treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal and Technical Committee chairman Engr. Jojo Buenaventura and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land, Buenaviel and PCWorx and sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Atty.
